This has to be one of my favourite musical movies of all time, here’s a quick low down on it:John Travolta has made plenty of mistakes as an actor, but he has rejected every film role that could tarnish his 1970s musical legacy. Now, though, his resolve has finally snapped, and in spectacular fashion. In Adam Shankman’s new version of the musical Hairspray, Travolta stuffs himself into a fat suit to play a housewife made famous by the portly transvestite Divine.

The shock of seeing this iconic dancefloor legend return to his musical roots as a 48-st pantomime dame is not easy to swallow. The make-up is monstrous. Travolta’s face is a fleshy pink pumpkin. His watery blue eyes look far too close for comfort. His breasts threaten to burst out of his dressing gown, and his beehive is basically a hedge.

Yet Travolta is a blubbery scream as Edna, the doting mother of Tracy Turnblad (Nikki Blonsky), a plump schoolgirl whose waking dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show on television. “But darling, the neighbours haven’t seen me since I was a size 10,” whimpers Edna when Tracy tries to drag her from the ironing board to the TV studio in Baltimore in the summer of 1962. Corny’s dance show is a local version of Top of the Pops and Tracy is an instant sensation. But the boppy bohemian is working-class trash, the image of her mother, and inordinately fond of “negroes”.

“I want that chubby communist girl off the show,” fumes the boss of the hairspray company that sponsors the programme.

“I’ll gladly throw the harpoon,” simpers Michelle Pfeiffer’s poisonous producer. But Tracy’s record ratings and loyal schoolfriends thwart the evil plans of these ageing racist bigots.

I haven’t seen John Waters’ 1988 original, or the Broadway musical the film inspired in 2002, but the pulsating medley of jukebox tunes composed by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman feels remarkably fresh and sharp.

I normally loathe musicals. The unexpected pleasure of Hairspray is that it doesn’t beg to differ. The film spoofs Technicolor nostalgia and revels in the improbable odds of hailing a bus full of black delinquents who can put together an Oscar-winning dance piece before the next stop. This crude wink to unbelievers is the disarming magic.

You are charmed by Blonsky’s groovy Tracy, and slightly horrified by her dress size. In every other respect she is the classic musical heroine with a pure voice and electric smile. But it’s her batty parents who steal the show. Christopher Walken plays Tracy’s infatuated dad and his saucy overtures to Mom (Travolta) are squirmingly awful. They sizzle like two heterosexual wrestlers who would rather lose a limb than kiss.

Hannah Montana: Hannah Montana is the teen rock star that the Disney Channel series is named for.

Miley Stewart: Miley Stewart is the alter-ego of Hannah Montana. Miley Stewart is a normal teen with a secret – she doesn’t want the world to link her to Hannah Montana because she wants to have some semblance of a normal life.

Miley Cyrus: Miley Cyrus is the talented young actress who plays both Hannah Montana and Miley Stewart. Miley Cyrus is the 14 year old daughter of country singer and actor Billy Ray Cyrus.

Robby Stewart / Billy Ray Cyrus: Billy Ray Cyrus of the song “Achey Breaky Heart” and the series “Doc” is Miley Cyrus’ father and plays Miley Stewart’s father on the series.

Lilly / Emily: Lilly is Miley’s best friend on the series. She’s played by Emily Osment, an experienced young actress from “Spy Kids.” Emily is also the younger sister of the famous young actor Haley Joel Osment.

Disney Channel’s “Hannah Montana” : The Disney Channel series “Hannah Montana” debuted in March after a showing of “High School Musical.” It has been very popular and is destined to be a favorite Disney Channel series.
The storyline features Miley and her family moving across the country and starting over in California. Miley attempts to keep her other identity as Hannah Montana (a teen rocker) a secret. The show includes her best friends Lilly and Oliver, her brother Jackson, and her dad Robbie.

Oh yes, just got back from Tenpin bowling and trashed my Dad (loser). Been watching all my favourites again all weekend, even had chance to catch up with some of my friend’s on MSM – In fact at the moment i’m speaking to Bethan….

The Suite Life of Zack and Cody

Zack and Cody are 12-year-old twins who begin living the “suite” life when their mother gets a job singing at an upscale hotel in Boston. As part of the gig, she and the boys get to live at the hotel – a dream come true for Zack and Cody, but a nightmare at times for the hotel staff. Zack and Cody’s exploits are usually harmless and often well-intended, but that doesn’t keep them from getting into trouble. The show portrays the daily life and adventures of the boys and other characters involved with the hotel.

Also in the spotlight are the hotel manager, Mr. Moseby, and others who often have to deal with the twin’s antics. London, the hotel owner’s daughter adds plenty of drama to the show with her spoiled lifestyle; but her best friend Maddie, the candy store clerk, helps bring her back down to earth and lightens things up. Between the boys, the girls, and frequent interesting hotel guests, things are never boring in the Suite Life of Zack and Cody.

The Suite Life of Zack and Cody is a cute idea with storylines that are funny to kids, but the parallel storylines (of Zack and Cody and London and Maddie) which often intermingle cater to children who are maturing and becoming more interested in the drama of the preteen years.

Parents should know that, although Zack and Cody is aimed at kids and the themes are supposedly developed to be such, topics such as boy-girl relationships and other emerging young adult themes are presented. In one episode, Zack goes on a date to the hotel restaurant. In another, Maddie kisses a boy staying at the hotel. Also, London is often depressed over the lack of attention from her rich father and must deal with her feelings and her propensity to fix her problems by shopping.

The cocky twins often behave disrespectfully, although their behavior is usually not intended to be mean. While Zack and Cody don’t always make the right choices, they usually resolve their problems in a positive way by the end of the show. The danger is that viewing children may get the idea that the ends justify the means.

The Suite Life of Zack and Cody

Zack and Cody are often cocky and sometimes sarcastic. Does this behavior make them seem cool?

How could they remain cool but still show respect for others?

They are often very funny, but where should they draw the line between being funny and being rude?

Zack and Cody get into a lot of trouble that, in real life, would result in serious consequences. In what ways is the TV show a complete fantasy?

How would adults react if children behaved this way in the real world?

What would the consequences of their actions be?

That’s So Raven is an American Emmy Award-nominated sitcom television series broadcast on the Disney Channel.

The plot revolves around teenager Raven Baxter and her schemes to get herself, her friends Eddie and Chelsea, and family members, such as her brother Cory, out of various situations, usually by using her psychic powers and her skills as a master of disguise.

Seasons 1-3 were produced by Brookwell McNamara Entertainment. The fourth and final season was produced by Raven-Symoné.

It became the first (and only) Disney Channel Series to create a spin-off, Cory in the House, which followed her younger brother, Cory, as his dad becomes the head chef for the President of the United States, causing the two of them to move to Washington D.C.
